A long awaited new edition of Rena Gardiner’s celebrated portrait of the Isle of Purbeck.
The artist and printmaker Rena Gardiner’s four books about Dorset are now regarded as some of the most unusual books about the county to have been published. A one woman cottage industry, she wrote the text, drew the illustrations and printed the bound books herself. Copies are now scarce and eagerly sought after by the collectors, making this new edition long overdue.
Dorset: The Isle of Purbeck was originally published in 1969, and many consider it her finest acheivement. here are Purbeck’s villages, landscapes and coast - all of them brought vividly to life with the colour and exuberence that were the hallmarks of Rena Gardiner’s extraordinary style. Remarkably, little has changed since the book was first published, making it a fascinating portrait of one of best loved corners of England. This new edition includes biographical notes and an introduction to the methods by which Rena Gardiner worked.
