Wedgwood has a long connection to the British monarchy, beginning with the company’s founder, Josiah Wedgwood. Queen Charlotte’s (1744–1818) patronage in 1765 was a significant factor in the growth of Wedgwood’s reputation, naming his creamware as Queen’s Ware and adopting the title ‘Potter to Her Majesty’.
Since then, Wedgwood has embedded a tradition of creating commemorative pieces honouring significant royal events, such as this 1969 earthenware mug commemorating the investiture of Prince Charles (b.1948) as the Prince of Wales. Designed by British designer Richard Guyatt (1914-2007), it features to black and gold motifs depicting plumes of feathers and Welsh dragons.
Mug with loop handle, Queen's ware, black and gold transfer printed decoration; exterior body inscribed at rim height 'DUW GADWO'R TYWYSOG', black and gold Welsh Dragon symbol underneath, either side of dragon are two crowns and two plumes of feathers, below the plumes are ribbons with the inscription 'ICH DIEN', below ribbons is text 'CAERNARFON 1969' in gold, inside rim inscribed 'GOD BLESS THE PRINCE OF WALES' in gold.
