Water colour on paper, 1938. Even more so than other of Ravilious’s coastal paintings. ‘Rye Harbour’ captures the clarity of early morning seaside light. A rising sun is reflected in the water below; harbour walls stretch towards an invisible horizon and a clarity of vision is afforded.
